July Insight: Watch
July 8 // à la Sarah Kurdt & Zoe Williams
As we continue to educate ourselves on systemic racism and gain a better understanding of how to be an ally to the black community, we have chosen a few resources below to “watch” as part of our weekly Insight series. This section is for our visual learners, so grab your loved ones and get watching!
When They See Us (TV Series) This 4-part TV series follows the true story of the five young people that were charged with the crime of an assaulted jogger in 1989. An amazing story of systemic racism and the legal system. (Each episode is 1 hour)
Just Mercy (Movie) Released in 2019, this movie stars Michael B. Jordan as a lawyer fighting for an innocent black man. This movie also addresses racism in the judicial system. It won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Motion Picture. (2 hours)
An Interview With The Founders of Black Lives Matter (TED Talk) Born out of a social media post, the three female founders of the Black Lives Matter movement share the importance of investing in black leadership. This video has over 1 million views! (15 minutes)
White Women Who Truly Want To Help: Here’s How (Instagram Live) Ivirlei Brookes uses her social media platform to empower white women, rather than guilting them about their lack of allyship. She recommends to “commit yourself to being the ‘very vocal white friend’ and call out when you see racist behaviors or conversations.” (11 Minutes)
Let us know if you watch any of the above, or have an insightful movie or TV show to share. Stay Peachy. Xx.
